Aston Villa handed Champions League upper hand after Tottenham collapse v Arsenal

Arsenal’s victory over Tottenham Hotspur, the only team that can catch them, on Sunday increased Aston Villa’s chances of finishing in the top four.

On Sunday, Aston Villa’s chances of qualifying for the Champions League were greatly enhanced when Tottenham Hotspur lost 3-2 to Arsenal, their fierce rivals in North London. Seeking their first league title since 2004, the Gunners controlled the first half, scoring three goals in quick succession with strikes from Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka, as well as an own goal from Pierre-Emile Højbjerg.

In the second half, Spurs did respond, but their effort was ineffective in providing much comfort. This was Spurs’ second straight loss following their crushing setback against Newcastle United two weeks prior.

Villa’s lead over Spurs has increased by another point this gameweek, even though they lost on Saturday night despite leading 2-0 at home against Chelsea, failing to stop a Blues comeback in the second half and, to be honest, barely hanging on in the final moments of the match.

Crucially, this implies that Villa now controls their own destiny since, despite Spurs having two games remaining, the difference between the two teams in the standings is now seven points. In their last game, Spurs still have to play both Manchester City and Liverpool, while Villa will host the latter team the following month.

Villa now understand that if they win their next three games—against Brighton, Crystal Palace, and Liverpool—they will be unbeatable in the race for the last possible Champions League spot, no matter what Spurs do in their final five games. Naturally, Villa fans were elated after seeing Arsenal lend them a hand in their league championship campaign.

Kash: This season, Arsenal has been among the most giving teams. taking them away from Spurs and awarding us an additional three points, for a total of six points. Nine points, that is! I appreciate your mid-club and #afc.

Edward Cartledge: It’s far too soon to start bunting, but even if we didn’t pick up any more points, Spurs would actually need to win three of their next five games to secure a fourth-place finish if their current record holds true.

Northvillan: I like that Spurs still have games to play and we have the points. provides one more reason to watch and support the opposition during every Spurs game till the end of the season.

Joshua Moore: I’m grateful, Arsenal! We will still be ahead of Spurs by one point even if they win their final two games.

Steven Billingham: Those victories against Bournemouth and Arsenal don’t seem too bad right now.

Adrian Siggins: It looks like a decent point was gained against Chelsea last night.

Matt Lynch: Full steam ahead for scoreboard pressure. Liverpool/Chelsea, rally!

Darren Campbell: We received a point yesterday that we most likely didn’t deserve despite a subpar performance. And now that Arsenal managed to hang on, our lead over Spurs has grown. That point from yesterday might end up being really significant.
