How the 49ers Could Trade Brandon Aiyuk on NFL Draft Day

The 49ers could potentially deal Brandon Aiyuk on NFL draft day. Here’s what it could look like.

Brandon Aiyuk trade talks will continue throughout the summer until he signs a contract deal with the San Francisco 49ers.

They will, however, begin to slow if he remains on the team after the NFL draft. It would make no sense for the 49ers to deal Aiyuk after the draft, denying themselves the opportunity to choose someone who can help them immediately.

So, from now until the draft, Aiyuk will focus primarily on trade scenarios. A draft-day trade is one possibility if the 49ers decide to let him go. The 49ers may accomplish this by selecting a wide receiver in the first round, such as Adonai Mitchell.

It would make sense for the 49ers to find an Aiyuk successor and then move him. That means the 49ers will not receive a first-round pick in return, but they will undoubtedly receive a great package of second-round picks. That is most likely the reality of moving a wide receiver because a first is unlikely, especially given the current market conditions.

And at that point, if you’re the 49ers, I believe you could stomach giving up a ton of day two draft picks for Aiyuk because, with a receiver selected, you will have effectively closed the gap he left. Of course, they should only do this if they already have a trade partner who has a package ready.

The 49ers must also genuinely select their wide receiver, however if they were that interested in Mitchell, they might consider trading up for a few picks. Considering that he and Aiyuk have comparable skill sets, getting him would make sense.

Once more, this is assuming the 49ers decide that dealing Aiyuk is better and that they want to target a rookie receiver on draft day.
