2024 NFL mock draft: San Francisco 49ers select Tyler Guyton

The 49ers choose… with the 31st choice in the Pride of Detroit Community Mock Draft.

With the 31st pick in our 2024 Pride of Detroit Community Mock Draft, the San Francisco 49ers are officially on the clock.

The 49ers had an incredible season the year before, which included a victory in the [GAME REDACTED] but a heartbreaking loss to Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl.

The 49ers choose Oklahoma offensive tackle Tyler Guyton with the 31st choice in the POD Community Mock.

StevenGreen8 explains the choice as follows:

The defensive line has seen the most departures for the San Francisco 49ers, as players like Arik Armstead, Javon Kinlaw, and Chase Young have found new homes. Although this gave the 49ers options for players like Braden Fiske or Darius Robinson, they have also invested a lot of money in free agency to replace those positions. This has allowed them to maintain their best player available philosophy, even though I believe there are better values at other positions at this point in our mock draft.

“Now that the majority of the clear gaps for the upcoming season have been filled (aside from a few depth pieces that are needed—avoid Brock Wright!), we can examine the 49ers’ contracts, which are riddled with concerns at multiple spots. Just like with the Detroit Lions. Who will you compensate?

Could those be places to consider, with players like Logan Ryan retiring and defensive backfield’s two main cornerbacks having contracts that are about to expire? Players like Brandon Aiyuk may be on the way out. Even if this isn’t the best year to select the best safety available in the first round, would it make sense to select a cornerback like Ennis Rakestraw to guarantee that spot going forward?

Despite all of these options, the offensive line, where the most of the players are unsigned for the 2017 season, has the most obvious problem. To make matters worse, right tackle Colton McKivitz was this team’s starting and finishing point going into the playoffs, as noted by 49ers writer and podcaster Rob Guerrera.

This leads us to our selection: Oklahoman OT Tyler Guyton. Huge (6-foot-8), athletic, and possessing raw talents, he may sit and study or compete for a season before the absence of long-term contracts on the offensive line becomes a problem because of McKivitz’s one-year agreement. In order to protect Trent Williams’ future on the outside of the line, Guyton appears to be the best pure offensive tackle still available, while fellow tackles Kingsley Suamataia and Jordan Morgan would also be given consideration.
