Ally McCoist ‘set up’ as Scott Brown in on Celtic vs Rangers Lennon spat stitch-up

After being “set up” by Scott Brown and Jim White in an on-air recall to his acrimonious discussion with Neil Lennon in 2011, Rangers legend Ally McCoist was left speechless.

Following a ferocious derby between Celtic and Rangers, McCoist, the Ibrox assistant, and Lennon battled at Parkhead’s full time.

After the final whistle, a third red card was given and two Rangers players were sent off as the game ended 1-0 in favour of Celtic.

The main story from the encounter, however, was the altercation between McCoist and Lennon over the phone, which both men are questioned about.

Nonetheless, McCoist was taken aback when Ayr United manager Scott Brown joined him on talkSPORT and brought up the issue live.

A pre-recorded message from Jim White mentioning the event was aired, shocking the Ibrox legend and causing McCoist to burst out laughing.

“You played in many Old Firm games,” White questioned Brown. What were some of the wildest incidents, and how did you interpret the well-known McCoist-Lennon touchline altercation?”

Then McCoist said, “Hahaha! I had no idea that I was being set up, Broony! I had no idea that I was being set up.

“To be fair, I quite enjoyed it – you took the pressure off me for once!” Brown responded, wading into the incident. It’s unbelievable that neither of you received a red card for it. However, you made up and kissed?”

McCoist answered, “Oh, yeah. Right after that, we drank a bottle of beer.”

Brown said, “That’s a good thing,” in closing. That’s the main focus. You attempt to win during the ninety minutes of play. It’s the same as a manager. You give a little, you take a little, and then you ought to be leaving to go have beer and other refreshments.

“It was never truly comprehended by anyone. My closest friends were Whitts (Steven Whittaker) and Thommo (Kevin Thommo), and there was a time we left Scotland right after the Old Firm game. In the same automobile, we all leaped. They’ve got Rangers gear on, and I’m wearing a Celtic tracksuit.

“And people are saying, ‘Broony, what are you doing with them?'” And I thought, “Aye, you’re actually spot on!” However, we had been friends since we were eleven or twelve years old.”
