Sunderland won’t lose any sleep over Arsenal transfer miss: View
Sunderland were connected with Charles Sagoe Jr in January, but he instead joined Swansea and failed to make an impression.
The teenager has joined Swansea City, where he has not made much of an impression, so the Black Cats will not be concerned.
The Sunderland Echo stated that the club was in talks with Arsenal for a loan move for the winger at the end of the January transfer window. However, the deal did not materialize and the winger instead moved to a Championship competitor.
The 19-year-old is highly regarded by Arsenal, and he earned his first-team debut for the club earlier this season, beginning a League Cup match away to Brentford and playing 68 minutes.
However, he has not fared well in the Championship, and it may be for the best that Sunderland did not sign him.
Charles Sagoe Jr has struggled at Swansea City
It looked like a smart idea at the time, but Sagoe Jr hasn’t had much of an impact in the Championship since joining Swansea at the end of January.
He has only played two games for the Swans, both from the bench, with only 25 minutes of first-team experience.
After making the matchday squad for his first five games as a Swansea City player, Sagoe Jr appears to have fallen out of favour with Luke Williams, as he has not made the squad since Swansea’s trip to the Stadium of Light on February 24th.
It may speak volumes that 17-year-old winger Aimar Govea has been chosen over Sagoe Jr in recent matchday squads, and it’s safe to conclude his move to South Wales has been a flop.
With Swansea battling relegation until recently, it’s fair that he wasn’t thrown in at the deep end, but despite being safe, he has yet to be given an opportunity.
He has barely had an opportunity to demonstrate his abilities, and he may have fared better at Sunderland, who were not in danger of relegation, but Sunderland’s hierarchy will not be sleeping well after missing out on bringing Sagoe Jr to the club.
Charles Sagoe Jr is talented but needs to find the right club
You don’t play for Arsenal unless you have something to offer, thus it’s safe to believe Charles Sagoe Jr. has talent.
This season, the player made eight appearances for Arsenal’s U21 team, scoring once and assisting six times. Although the transition from Premier League 2 to the Championship is enormous, there is little doubt that there is a player in there.
It remains to be seen what the future holds for the player this summer, with Arsenal likely eager to loan him out again.
Despite his somewhat anonymous tenure at Swansea, Sunderland may revive their interest in the midfielder this summer.
The Black Cats are always prepared to give young players a chance, and with winger Jewison Bennette failing to impress while on loan with Aris in Greece, the Costa Rica international may not have much of a future at the Stadium of Light.
This means that signing Sagoe Jr on loan is a viable option, and with a full pre-season, he may be a different beast than the one we’ve seen at Swansea.
It’s often difficult for a young player to join a relegation-threatened club in January, and a fresh start in the summer could be just what the Arsenal man needs.
