Sunderland fumbled “magical” PL sensation who is now worth £60m

When Millwall visits the Stadium of Light on Saturday, Sunderland will have the opportunity to win two straight games in the Championship for the first time since December of last year.

It won’t be easy for Mike Dodds’ team to win two straight, though, as the Lions have been rejuvenated under new manager Neil Harris, who led the South London team to a thrilling three points against Leicester City just now.

When Harris’s players arrive to Wearside, Sunderland will want players like Jack Clarke—who is still the Black Cats’ key man whenever he’s fit—to be playing at full tilt.

In an alternate reality, Sunderland could well have had this star on their books who is as flashy as Clarke but has made a name for himself as a slick and skilful player who is too tricky for a number of Premier League defences.

Premier League star’s failed trial at Sunderland

Undoubtedly, a lot of Championship clubs are haunted by the regret of not signing a trialist to a full contract when the modest kid goes on to become a huge sensation.

Even at one point, Southampton had the young sensation Jamal Musiala from Bayern Munich in their lineup, little realizing that he would later become the key man in attack for the Bavarian giants after leaving St. Mary’s.

This has also happened to Sunderland, who briefly tried out brilliant Crystal Palace prospect Eberechi Eze before letting him go to eventually play for Queens Park Rangers.

Revealed by the entertaining Palace number seven in a recent tell-all interview, the likes of fellow second-tier sides Millwall and Bristol City also had a good look at the once unproven gem when he was trying to make a name for himself.

The rest is history from Eze’s perspective, who is now being touted for a mega-money move away from Selhurst Park after once being rejected by the underperforming Black Cats.

Eberechi Eze’s transfer value in 2024

Eze’s current value, according to Football Transfers, is a healthy €40.2M (£34.3M), but Palace will know that, in the end, they can extract even more money from their brilliant £19.5M acquisition.

Tottenham Hotspur is now reportedly interested in signing the captivating 25-year-old, who has reportedly been courted by Manchester City for £60 million before a ball has been kicked this season. Both teams must realize that paying an absurd sum is the only way they can succeed in obtaining Eze’s highly sought-after signature.

Eze scored his seventh Premier League goal of the season against Liverpool with a masterfully executed winning goal in his most recent game. He would be a great asset to whichever elite team he plays for next campaign.

Paul Hall, who assisted Eze in becoming the star he is today at QPR, has called him “magical” when it comes to the ball since his exciting youth days. Sunderland has to keep replaying the decision to turn down the outstanding Eagles midfielder over and over in their minds as a grave mistake. While the much-talked-about Palace man continues to grow in the division above, Dodds will just have to hope that Sunderland can eventually find their very own Eze among the multitude of up-and-coming young stars coming through at the Stadium of Light.
