Sammie Szmodics transfer latest: Sunderland claim, Celtic blow, Alan Shearer message

Sammie Szmodics transfer latest: Sunderland claim, Celtic blow, Alan Shearer message.

FLW looks at the latest transfer news regarding Blackburn Rovers’ Sammie Szmodics.

Sammie Szmodics, an attacking midfielder for Blackburn Rovers, has had a great 2023/24 campaign.

The 28-year-old is the Championship’s leading scorer with 24 goals in 41 games, despite not being a striker and playing for a team ranked 17th.

The Republic of Ireland international was one of three nominees for Championship Player of the Year, but lost to Leeds’ Crysencio Summerville.

Despite missing out on the prize, Szmodics has been a standout performer in the Championship this season and is expected to draw transfer interest this summer.

With that in mind, here’s the latest Sammie Szmodics transfer update…

Don Goodman makes Sammie Szmodics transfer prediction.

Don Goodman, an EFL analyst for Sky Sports, believes that Sammie Szmodics will only play Premier League football if he joins a Championship club that is promoted to the top tier.

Goodman, who is 28 years old and has a contract at Ewood Park until the summer of 2026, believes that gaining promotion with a club like Sunderland is his greatest chance to play in the Premier League.

Goodman told The Chronicle that he believes Sammie Szmodics would be a fantastic addition for Sunderland. Yes. However, given their recruitment objective of signing younger players, they would not consider him.

“Sammie must continue to work hard, and he may be able to transfer to a team with a chance of reaching the Premier League, with all due respect to Blackburn. The only way he can get to the Premier League is to be promoted with a club like Sunderland.

“With respect to him as a player, the step-up is tremendous; I would never say he can’t make the step-up, but looking at his career, I’d say he’s at his prime and will not be signed by a Premier League team.

“It’s no dig at him, the same statement applies to a whole load of players in the Championship.”

Given his form for Rovers this season, Szmodics will believe he can do better than join Sunderland, especially after his team thrashed the Black Cats 5-1 at the Stadium of Light on Easter Monday.

Top clubs set to battle it out for Sammie Szmodics, Celtic dealt blow

Celtic, Brentford, and Fulham are reportedly interested in signing the Championship’s leading scorer this summer.

The Irish international has two years left on his contract at Ewood Park, so it would have to be a decent offer from an interested club for Blackburn to accept it, but considering Premier League clubs’ financial resources, they would be able to make Rovers an enticing offer.

According to Football Insider, Celtic’s pursuit of Szmodics will be hindered by the club’s inability to compete with English clubs in terms of transfer prices and wages, putting them at a disadvantage.

Alan Shearer sends message to Sammie Szmodics.

Alan Shearer, Blackburn Rovers’ title-winning striker, congratulated Sammie Szmodics on becoming the first Blackburn player to record 30 goals in a season since Shearer achieved the feat in 1995/96.

Szmodics scored his 24th Championship goal and 30th overall this season, including six goals in three FA Cup games.

In a video shared on Blackburn’s social media accounts, the great striker replies, “30, huh, not bad. Congratulations, mate. Keep up the wonderful work.”
