Newcastle United ‘join Tottenham Hotspur’ in race for ex-Sheffield United man as Everton seek contract extension

Some former Sheffield United players are facing uncertain futures heading into the summer transfer window.

Morgan Gibbs-White, a former Sheffield United player, is reportedly attracting interest from Newcastle United, with Tottenham Hotspur reportedly mulling a summer deal for the Nottingham Forest star.

After moving from Wolves to Forest in August 2022, the 24-year-old has made 75 appearances for the City Ground team. He was instrumental in the team’s successful first season back in the Premier League as they maintained their top division position.

The attacking midfielder, who spent the 2021–22 season on loan at Bramall Lane and helped United advance to the Championship play-offs with 12 goals and 10 assists in 37 games, is well-known among Blades supporters.

According to Football Insider, Newcastle and Tottenham are now interested in signing the player. Should Forest be demoted from the Premier League, they will have to sell off a significant number of players because they will need to maintain their current FFP/PSR ratio in order to avoid further sanctions, having already been hit with a four-point deduction this season.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin, another former Blade, has a contract that expires at the end of the following season, although he may be able to stay at Everton longer. Football Insider also reports that if the Toffees avoid relegation to the Championship, they will want to start negotiations for an extension.

The 27-year-old, who had signed a deal at Goodison Park in 2020, left the Blades to join Everton in August of 2016. He has made 242 appearances for the Merseyside team, tallying 17 assists and 66 goals.

Speaking in February, Everton manager Sean Dyche seemed to support Calvert-Lewin’s decision to remain with the team past 2025. “I have never doubted his long-term future here,” he stated. I believe he has demonstrated his skill as a player over the years. He’s had a few unremarkable years that have been difficult for him, the squad, and the appropriate managers. He is a striker, so of course he wants to score goals, but he also seems to be content with his surroundings and the activities we are doing here, and he is still giving his all in the game.

“In general, I am happy with him, but we both realise that we need goals and that he wants them. He is an offensive player. In the end, except from adding the crucial moments, which is scoring, I believe he is generally happy with his performance. “We have been looking at all the contracts,” he continued. We continue to examine everything that is housed here. We let the agents know about it and make sure that everyone is aware of it, including myself and [Kev Thelwell, director of football]. This way, it’s not only him; there are other circumstances that require attention.
