‘Can’t be doing that’: Derek Mountfield says Everton have done something unacceptable now

On Monday night, Everton’s hopes of surviving were severely damaged as they were defeated 6-0 by a lacklustre Chelsea team.

Due to their recklessness, the West London team had trouble breaking down low-block defending the entire season and had lately lost losses to relegation-threatened teams like Burnley and Sheffield United.

Therefore, it makes sense that there was some quiet confidence prior to the Toffees’ journey to Stamford Bridge.

That was swiftly removed, though, and the events that followed severely damaged supporters’ expectations for the last few Premier League games of the season. They received severe punishment for their lack of strategic acumen.

Derek Mountfield delivers grim Chelsea assessment

Derek Mountfield, who had played for one of the most successful Everton teams in history during the 1980s, gave his sombre assessment of Monday night’s performance in an interview with BBC Radio Merseyside just yesterday.

Seeing how far they have fallen must be painful for someone who has seen and played with the greatest at Goodison Park.

“I tuned in expecting a performance where we’re grafting, we’re fighting, and we’re looking like we’re going to do something,” he said, expressing his intense feelings. “And then we throw in a performance like last night.”

“It’s unacceptable in my opinion; everyone, including the manager, needs to perform better overall.” At this point in the season, every game is a cup final for us, so we can’t be doing that.

The most disheartening part is that we gave up six goals, levelling the playing field with everyone else despite our excellent goal differential versus those around us.

“It will be a challenging next five or six games as many people’s perception of Everton’s play has changed as a result of that one result.”

Everton put in a performance worthy of relegation

Even while losing against a superior team is a possibility for every Premier League team, especially one with the skill and confidence that Everton lacks, the way they lost on Monday was disgusting.

In the end, they were not only outclassed, but they also gave Chelsea the green light to outshine them.

The goals were given to them easily by the hosts due to careless play or egregious mistakes, thus they didn’t have to put in much effort.

It appeared as though the Blues would threaten every time they surged forward since they had a nonexistent midfield and a back four that could not handle the speed and space of their opponents.

However, Jordan Pickford may have been at fault for the next two goals, Jarrad Branthwaite was left helplessly stranded for the first, and the last three just gave Chelsea all the time they needed to increase the humiliating score.

Even worse, Sean Dyche’s team offered no resistance at all.

It’s one thing to lack talent, but it’s unacceptable to put up little effort. This team already appeared to be headed for relegation, but they have to show against Nottingham Forest on Sunday that they are not.
