When it comes to selecting players in the first round of the draft, the 49ers have a dismal history. In the 2024 draft, will they buck the trend?

The San Francisco 49ers will have a first-round pick in the NFL draft for the first time since 2021.

Given that the 49ers are selecting at No. 31 at the end of the round, it is difficult to predict what they will do. Who knows what prospects there might be—and that’s presuming the 49ers maintain their position at No. 31.

For the 49ers, though, guessing who will attend seems pointless. This is due to the fact that they have mostly failed to capitalize on their first-round pick since Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch took charge in 2017.

Can the 49ers be relied upon to make the right choice with their first-round pick?

They are unable to. Brandon Aiyuk is the first player the 49ers have successfully selected in the first round. Furthermore, I do not believe that the 49ers should have drafted Nick Bosa. Even non-football fans would have known to select him with the second overall pick in 2019. The 49ers made a layup with that.

Apart from that, they have utterly failed in their initial attempt to locate someone. When they first enrolled Solomon Thomas and Rueben Foster in their first year, it all began. For them, those two selections were total busts and whiffs.

They selected Mike McGlinchey in the next draft year. He was a whiff, for sure, even though he wasn’t a bust. A player selected with the 10th overall pick in the draft must be a pillar of the team, and McGlinchey was not talented enough to stick with the 49ers after signing a rookie deal.

In reference to whiffs, the 49ers’ Javon Kinlaw had a ton of them. He was never going to be an impact player; he was supposed to be DeForest Buckner’s replacement. He didn’t find any efficacy until this past season, when he at last had some good fortune with his health.

Trey Lance’s selection was the 49ers’ most foolish draft choice, but Kinlaw was still a squandered pick. Lance was given a lot of opportunities by the 49ers, but he was only able to make a few starts for them. Unfortunate health circumstances were a factor, but Lance was the worst 49ers draft choice ever.

In the initial round, this regime is clueless about what to do. This is because Shanahan is more involved in that round than he is in subsequent ones, when the 49ers typically find their good draft selections. It makes no difference what position the 49ers choose when choosing a player in the first round.

Even if it is a role they are comfortable in, they simply have to get it correctly. They need to identify a player who can be an impact starter for years to come and finally halt their terrible first-round draft pick streak.
