Dundee-Rangers backup plan made public: inspection of Dens Park, St Johnstone in the lineup, and fan decision

Dundee-Rangers contingency plan revealed – Dens Park inspection, St Johnstone lined up, decision made on fans

If Dundee’s home field is unsuitable, the twice-called-off match could take place in Perth.

If Dens Park fails a pitch inspection on Tuesday, St Johnstone’s stadium McDiarmid Park has been scheduled as a backup location for Wednesday’s pivotal Premiership match between Dundee and Rangers.

Even though Dundee secured the final spot in the top six with a draw at Aberdeen on Saturday, the Scottish Professional Football League still wants the game to take place before the post-split fixtures start. Due to a flooded field, the game was called off 90 minutes before kickoff on March 17 and again last Wednesday afternoon. This is the eighth postponement of the game at Dens Park this season. The general public has now been informed of the contingency steps that the SPFL implemented in response to the issue.

In advance of Wednesday’s game, the SPFL has hired a seasoned pitch consultant—a service that is frequently utilized by UEFA and other athletic organizations—to provide the league with advice on the status of the pitch. “Dundee was also told on Thursday that they needed to notify any issues with Wednesday’s game at Dens Park right away, as well as give daily reports on the playing surface and weather prediction to the SPFL, Rangers, and pitch consultants.

It has also been decided that the match official will inspect the field early on Tuesday, April 16, and that a final determination regarding whether to play the game at Dens Park will be made after considering the weather forecast. In the event that Dens Park is unable to host the match, the SPFL has announced that it will take place on Wednesday, April 17, at McDiarmid Park in St. Johnstone. Dundee has made plans for supporters of both sides to attend. It shall remain a Dundee FC “home game” even if it has to be shifted to McDiarmid Park. The SPFL will make another announcement (on Tuesday) and is appreciative of St Johnstone’s support.

“Following strong representations from Rangers, supporters who have tickets for Dens Park will be able to attend the game at McDiarmid Park, should it move,” the Rangers statement continued.
