Sunderland intended to emulate their 2022/23 Championship triumph in the 2023/24 season. The Black Cats have struggled this season and are not among the top six in the Championship, frustrating fans at the Stadium of Light.

To compete for a play-off berth next season, the Black Cats will need a successful transfer window to attract new players to Wearside.

However, the summer will also see several existing Mackems stars leave the club, with three players currently due to leave the North East team unless they agree to new contracts.

These are the three players currently slated to leave the Stadium of Light:

Corry Evans

Corry Evans, a former Blackburn Rovers player, joined the Black Cats in 2021 on a two-year contract that will keep him at the Stadium of Light until 2023.

He was a vital player in the Mackems’ 2021/22 promotion-winning season, making 33 League One games and leading his club to a play-off berth before winning the final at Wembley.

Evans signed a new contract with Wearside FC in February 2023, extending his stay until the conclusion of the 2023/24 season. The club has the option to extend his contract for another year.

However, if the Black Cats have not yet exercised the Northern Irishman’s one-year contract extension option, he will depart the club for free this summer.

The Mackems may not extend the 33-year-old’s contract due to an anterior cruciate ligament injury that has prevented him from playing this season.

Ellis Taylor

Ellis Taylor

Ellis Taylor is a graduate of the Black Cats’ Academy of Light and appeared four times for the senior side during the 2021/22 season, three in the EFL Trophy and one in the EFL Cup.

The Black Cats were promoted from League One through the play-offs that season, but Taylor did not make a single league appearance as his team made their long-awaited Championship comeback.

The prodigy spent the 2022/23 season on loan at neighboring North East club Hartlepool United, then in League Two, where he made four league appearances but did not assist the team escape relegation to the National League.

Taylor played in the EFL Cup this season, but his three-year contract, signed after graduating from the academy in 2021, will end this summer.

Bradley Dack

Bradley Dack just joined the Black Cats in the summer of 2023, after spending six seasons at Blackburn, but he might leave as early as the end of June.

The offensive midfielder signed a one-year contract with the Stadium of Light Outfit, with the option to extend his stay for another year.

However, his tenure with the Wearside squad has been hindered by injury setbacks, which may make the Black Cats reluctant to grant him new terms.

Furthermore, the 30-year-old was brought in by former manager Tony Mowbray, with whom he had worked at Ewood Park when at Rovers.

After sacking Mowbray in December, Dack may no longer be a top priority for the Black Cats.
