Why a Lack of Play Calling Experience Won’t be an Issue for DC Nick Sorensen

Donte Whitner, a former 49ers safety, doesn’t think defensive coordinator Nick Sorensen’s lack of play calling expertise will be a problem in 2024.

For the San Francisco 49ers, hiring from within at defensive coordinator always looked like the most sensible course of action.

They have benefited from sticking with the known face for Kyle Shanahan’s whole tenure. With this new season, Nick Sorensen hopes to maintain that encouraging trend. Sorensen has never called a play before, though. And it can be a problem for a club that is focused on winning right now.

Not unless you speak with Donte Whitner, an NBC Sports Bay Area analyst and former 49ers safety. During his guest appearance on Kay Adams’ Up and Adams broadcast on Monday, Whitner gave an explanation of why Sorensen won’t be affected by his lack of play calling expertise.

“It doesn’t matter because when you go through the week as you’re putting together a game plan everybody has their say so,” Whitner said. “The offensive line coach, the linebackers coach in the run and pass games, the secondary coach, and all the other coaches there in that conference room have a say in how they believe you should attack the offensive line.

“Hey, we have first and ten here versus this personnel,” they will all exclaim. There are just three calls left. There are only two calls: second and medium. We may have the most calls and packages on third and long. That doesn’t really worry me, though, because coming into the game and into every game, Nick Sorensen, whether he’s calling plays or Brandon Staley, they already pretty much know the calls and how they’re going to play every defense.

“Whitner makes a really good point. In addition to having a strong group of coaches at his disposal, I think the 49ers hired Brandon Staley because of this. In the plays, he will take on the role of somewhat of a supervisor, particularly if Sorensen is messing things up.

However, this is also the reason defense coordinator experience was essential. Sorensen won’t stray from the defense’s proven strategy. Because of his similar history to Robert Saleh and the year he spent working under DeMeco Ryans in 2022, he will be able to apply what has always worked the best.

If that fails, he has Staley and others to help guide him back in the correct direction.
