Why a Lack of Play Calling Experience Won’t be an Issue for DC Nick Sorensen

Donte Whitner, a former 49ers safety, doesn’t think defensive coordinator Nick Sorensen’s lack of play calling expertise will be a problem in 2024.

For the San Francisco 49ers, hiring from within at defensive coordinator always looked like the most sensible course of action.

They have benefited from sticking with the known face for Kyle Shanahan’s whole tenure. With this new season, Nick Sorensen hopes to maintain that encouraging trend. Sorensen has never called a play before, though. And it can be a problem for a club that is focused on winning right now.

Not unless you speak with Donte Whitner, an NBC Sports Bay Area analyst and former 49ers safety. During his guest appearance on Kay Adams’ Up and Adams broadcast on Monday, Whitner gave an explanation of why Sorensen won’t be affected by his lack of play calling expertise.
