Promotion or not, Leicester City supporters are right to be annoyed by Enzo Maresca flaw

Leicester City’s defeat at Millwall followed a similar pattern as they failed to make their possession count.

After successive victories, it had seemed like Leicester City were over their recent wobble, but a 1-0 defeat at Millwall on Tuesday night was a reminder that they still have work to do to reach the Premier League.

Since this is a tough league and the Foxes were never going to have an easy trip to The Den, any loss in isolation can be accepted.

The Leicester supporters, however, will have been irritated by the way the game was handled because they had witnessed their advantage being eroded over the previous few months.

Again, Enzo Maresca‘s team controlled possession, controlling 72% of the ball in the capital. Despite this dominance, they only managed three shots on goal, with the best chances coming late in the game.

When those big opportunities did present themselves, it was Patson Daka and Kelechi Iheanacho who were unable to return home when they really ought to have in order to at least salvage a point.

Millwall deserves all the credit for taking the three points because they fought hard, sat deep, and restricted space.

However, they are not the only team to succeed with that style of play.

After conceding territory and winning, Bristol City joined two other teams that have recently defeated Leicester—both Middlesbrough and QPR—and both teams did so with less than thirty percent of the possession.

Maresca is starting to worry about it, and you can be sure that other teams will adopt the same strategy for the rest of the season. Stay within the building, give Leicester the ball in safe zones and wait for opportunities to present themselves.

Maresca shouldn’t compromise his morals, and you shouldn’t either. At times, watching this Leicester team, who are at the top of the table, is enjoyable. Furthermore, he would correctly point out that if the team hadn’t been wasteful in front of goal, some of these losses might have been different.

Hence, it’s not as if Leicester have serious problems; rather, the main concern should be how, if they make it to the Premier League, this strategy will hold up.

Burnley, who defeated the Championship a year ago, is currently 19th in the Premier League with 19 points from 32 games. Relegation is likely despite having spent more over £100 million in the summer, something the Foxes will not be able to accomplish.

Their playing style is mostly to blame for that. They shared Leicester’s openness and expansiveness, and they believed they could leave their mark on the league.

They discovered that it’s the most brutal division in the world and that even midtable teams are fortunate to have elite players who can really hurt things, especially when they’re on the break.

Maresca will probably be depending on a large portion of this team to keep Leicester in the Premier League since he is worried about the club’s financial standing if they do advance. Against the best, mistakes that are occasionally penalised in the Championship will be frequently highlighted.

Maresca has to be considered a success if he is able to lead the Midlands team back to the Premier League in his first season of leadership. He deserves a great deal of respect.
