Millwall boss explains what Leicester City ‘deserved’ after shock defeat

Latest Leicester City news from LeicestershireLive as Foxes suffer but stay top after Leeds United are frustrated by Sunderland.

Neil Harris, the manager of Millwall, was eager to make a statement after his relegation-threatened team surprised form by defeating Leicester City.

At the New Den, a spectacular Ryan Longman goal condemned the Foxes to a 1-0 loss, with manager Enzo Maresca lamenting the ups and downs of the Championship as the season approaches its conclusion.

Harris, though, was eager to refute any idea that Leicester’s Tuesday night loss was unfortunate. “It was a great Millwall performance,” he declared. We managed to score a goal good enough to win any football match. Additionally, the team’s discipline and form were the best I’ve seen on the pitch at the Den.

“Leicester may argue that they should have received a point for the three opportunities they had in88,90, and 94, but we had a chance to win 7-1 against Rotherham. We could say that while we had scoring opportunities in the first half, Michael Obafemi had a one-on-one second half.

“It was really impressive of this group to play against possibly the best team in the league and limit them to very little.”

Harris was still stinging from the Lions’ Easter Monday loss to relegation-threatened Rotherham and their subsequent Saturday defeat at Huddersfield, which sent them back into the Championship relegation struggle. Harris had returned to the New Den as manager in late February.

Harris stated there was still more work to be done, despite the fact that their first victory in five games had moved them four points out of the relegation zone. “First of all, it’s very Millwall-like to lose in the final seconds to both Rotherham and Huddersfield, and then defeat the league leaders,” he continued.

That is the purpose of this club. We’re heading in the right direction—not just this bunch, but the last 30 years of Millwall Football Club as well. I’m seeing a lot of good things in the group.

“I’m happy since this week has been difficult for all of us. Both the football team and the supporters have had a difficult week. I detected a hint of anxious expectation and apprehension that was most likely returning to the football team.

“I told the group yesterday that I didn’t come here or have time for that. When everyone told me they couldn’t perform at The Den, I returned in an attempt to inspire and encourage them there. Go ahead and show me. And they have responded to that critique once more.

Leicester’s promotion campaign was rekindled as they rose to the top of the table thanks to back-to-back victories. However, third-place Ipswich may go above both if they defeat Watford on Wednesday, while Leeds can only draw with Sunderland at home and maintain their second position with a point.
