Premier League clubs are reportedly still expected to receive a points deduction if they breach financial rules.

In March, Leicester City was accused of violating the Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) of the league. Before they were demoted, it is alleged that they disregarded elite financial rules for the final three-year cycle that concluded in 2022–2023.

Both Nottingham Forest and Everton received points deductions for violating PSR immediately, while City has been submitted to an independent panel and may lose points from the upcoming season.Leicester has chosen to file a lawsuit after becoming “surprised and disappointed.”

And now Sky Sports are reporting that the “primary issue on the agenda” at the Premier League teams’ Wednesday, April 10 shareholders meeting will be squad cost containment. They say there won’t be a vote on this matter.

According to recent reports, a new “luxury tax” could be implemented, deducting clubs’ points but instead awarding them with a large punishment. The money would be shared among the clubs that complied with the guidelines, and fines would escalate based on how serious the violation was.

They continue by saying that although there is some support for a system similar to a luxury tax, there are concerns that it would encourage the richest teams to spend enormous amounts of money on players.

There are rumours that the topic of discussion on Wednesday will probably be the Premier League’s compliance with the new UEFA regulations. Regulations prohibiting clubs in Europe from spending more than 70% of their entire revenue on players will be implemented by the European regulatory body in 2025–2026.
