Gary Bennett was not impressed with this Mike Dodds decision during Sunderland vs Blackburn Rovers.

On Easter Monday, Sunderland icon Gary Bennett voiced his disapproval of one of Mike Dodds’ choices.

The Black Cats lost badly against Blackburn Rovers 5-1 in the Championship; this is only the third time the team has let five goals slip at the Stadium of Light in a meaningful match.

With two goals behind them at the interval, many Sunderland fans were expecting changes. But Mike Dodds, the acting head coach, chose to maintain the status quo, and the Black Cats soon gave up two more goals.

When Sunderland’s home match against Blackburn Rovers was four goals behind, Dodds at last went to his bench, inserting Chris Rigg, Bradley Dack, and Jack Clarke. However, it was too little, too late for Sunderland veteran and BBC Radio Newcastle pundit Bennett.

Bennett criticised Dodds’ move, saying, “You go 4-0 down, and then they decide to make a substitution.” Put on three substitutes. When you’re behind 4-0, what do you think they’ll do?

“After that, you put on Jack Clarke.” When you’re down4-0, you switch to Jack Clarke. It was very likely that his injury would have returned. How would you like Jack Clarke to proceed? I don’t understand.

This coming Saturday, Sunderland will play Bristol City at the Stadium of Light in the Championship. Following the chaos on Easter Monday, Dodds and his team are under pressure to provide a respectable performance. With 19 games lost thus far this season, the Wearsiders are now 13th in the league.
