Sunderland broke an unwanted 65-year record in Blackburn Rovers horror show

Sunderland were humiliated by Blackburn Rovers on Easter Monday.

Monday afternoon’s 5-1 home loss by Sunderland to Blackburn Rovers was something that few, if any, could have foreseen.

Indeed, a lot of people may have predicted Mike Dodds’ team to defeat a reeling Rovers team after they got back on track on Friday.

Prior to the weekend, Sunderland defeated Cardiff City 2-0.

After seven games without a victory, they played with greater attacking freedom and potency that day, resembling their previous selves.

Additionally, Sunderland had a strong start versus Blackburn.

However, things began to change after fifteen minutes, and thirty minutes later, the first of five goals was scored.

Dodds would have been ecstatic to win on Friday and record his first victory.

However, he was furious with his performance on Monday, and he spoke candidly about it at the press conference held after the game.

With 11 points separating Sunderland and the bottom three, the Black Cats are currently two points behind Bristol City in 12th place in the Championship table.

There are still six games to go and relegation looks quite unlikely.

However, it also appears exceedingly unlikely that Sunderland would finish strongly and set the standard for the summer.

Sunderland break 65-year record against Blackburn Rovers on Easter Monday

And as it happens, the Easter Monday loss to Blackburn Rovers was not only humiliating, but also broke a record.

Journalist James Copley disclosed during the game that the Rovers match was Sunderland’s worst home loss on Easter Monday and the team’s worst Easter Monday loss since 1959, or 65 years ago.

Furthermore, Sunderland has only given up five goals at the Stadium of Light three times.

Blackburn horror show does Black Cats hierarchy no favours

A new manager will be hired by Kyril Louis-Dreyfus and Kristjaan Speakman in the summer, and losses like the one against Blackburn Rovers hurt their chances of landing a quality coach.

When they see this outcome, celebrities like Will Still and even Steve Cooper will undoubtedly be discouraged from visiting Wearside.

The current playing group is just not good enough, and things will only get worse because Jack Clarke is expected to depart in the summer, maybe with teammates like Anthony Patterson.

There’s also little hope that Sunderland can make the most of the millions that Patterson and Clarke will be spending in the summer, since confidence in Speakman’s ability to make transfers has waned after this season.

There are a lot of issues to resolve, so the summer ahead will undoubtedly be important.
