Aston Villa face Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer doubts in top four battle

Currently ranked fourth in the Premier League, Aston must overcome Tottenham Hotspur to go to the Champions League the following season. In the race for a top-four place, Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer have supported Aston Villa to finish behind Tottenham Hotspur.

With their 2-0 victory against Wolves on Saturday, Villa maintained their position in fourth place and reclaimed a three-point lead over Spurs, who had defeated Luton Town earlier and have played one fewer game than Unai Emery’s team. As the Premier League awaits word on whether English clubs will be permitted to field five teams in the competition for the upcoming season, the two clubs are currently engaged in a fight for Champions League football.

The top two associations will receive an additional Champions League spot from UEFA based on how English teams perform in European events; the Premier League contingent is presently positioned below Germany and Italy in the coefficient system. Although Gary Lineker called the situation “precarious,” he thinks Villa will defeat Spurs handily to take fourth place in the standings.

Lineker posed the following question on the Rest is Football podcast: “Will Villa or Spurs finish fourth? I don’t believe United is dropping points at this time.

“United has no chance of placing fourth. “Spurs for me,” answered Alan Shearer.

Alongside his Match of the Day coworkers, former Aston Villa defender Michah Richards predicted his former team to place fourth. “I’ll go with the mighty Villans,” he declared. Why not?

“Well, I hope Spurs win; I have nothing against Aston Villa supporters.” Even though I played for Tottenham, I never scored at that awful place. I’ll be cheering them on. It could be close.

Richards, who captained goal scorer Son Heung-min in his FPL team, acknowledged that he was “ecstatic” to see Spurs come back from behind to defeat Luton even though he had backed Villa. With a draw against Brentford in the most recent round of results, Manchester United dropped to 11 points behind Villa and appeared to have given up on qualifying for the Champions League.
