David Moyes expressed his dismay at The Hammers’ failure in a crucial game at St. James’ Park after seeing his team blow a 3-1 lead and lose 4-3 to Newcastle United. Jarrod Bowen’s goal early in the second half gave West Ham the impression that they were coasting, but Alexander Isak converted his second penalty of the game, and a brace from Harvey Barnes in the last ten minutes completed the victory.
Before Harvey Barnes’ injury-time goal, West Ham saw a 3-1 lead vanish in just six minutes, and David Moyes said that his team “fell apart” against Newcastle.
When Jarrod Bowen expertly completed a counterattack move to put The Hammers ahead two goals ahead at the beginning of the second half, it looked like Moyes’ team was coasting. This completed a clinical run that proved to be a significant stride in the push for Europe.
But with 13 minutes remaining, a close penalty call gave Alexander Isak his second of the day. Barnes equalised shortly after, and he went on to win 4-3 at the end of 90 minutes to finish a victory that Magpies manager Eddie Howe called one of his best.
The difference between sixth-placed Manchester United and 13th-place Bournemouth is nine points, meaning that the outcome at St. James’ Park might be crucial in the Premier League, where the top eight teams may qualify for European competition next season.
Moyes said to TNT Sports, “We were playing against a good Newcastle team with a lot of good attacking players, and that showed in the second half.”
The West Ham manager went on, “Maybe both teams might say that, but certainly we fell apart more than they did. We have a lot of good attacking players, and that showed in the first half and a bit of the second half. But when it came to the defending bit, that part fell apart a little bit.”
While Newcastle got within one point of the seventh-place Hammers, Moyes questioned the VAR penalty call on the unfortunate Kalvin Phillips, who started the comeback.
Anthony Gordon jumped in as Phillips was setting up a clearing in the penalty area, getting his foot in front of him just in time for Phillips to make contact with Gordon’s ankle rather than the ball.
After arguing his innocence for less than ten minutes on the pitch, Phillips was ignored as VAR awarded Newcastle’s second penalty in an exciting match.
In fact, throughout the first half, the Newcastle dugout was ecstatic when West Ham overcame a 1-0 deficit to take the lead through Mohammed Kudus in the tenth minute of stoppage time.
After a brief hit to his face, Fabian Schar gave up a free kick but remained on the ground. However, West Ham did not lose time as Bowen swiftly pounced on the quickly taken set-piece to feed Kudus, who scored his 15th goal of the year.
The game appeared to be finished when Bowen added his team’s third goal after halftime, but Gordon and Barnes had other ideas. Howe appeared irritated that play had not been stopped for Schar.
Moyes continued, “In football, narrow margins can alter the outcome of a game.” “If you want to look at it another way, I actually believe that the boy kicks Phillips. He stops Kalvin Phillips from kicking the ball by putting his foot in front of him, so I don’t see how that’s really a penalty kick, but it was awarded nonetheless.””I think at 3-1 if we don’t give away the penalty we start to ease the game out, but I think the referee played a huge part in the result today, I really do.” Those decisions didn’t go our way; they were extremely difficult and close calls that didn’t go in our favour.
