Sunderland defeated Cardiff City thanks in large part to the brilliant play of Jobe Bellingham.
As long as he’s wearing a Sunderland shirt, Jobe Bellingham claims it doesn’t matter what position he plays in.
After being brought back into the center striker position by Mike Dodds, Bellingham gave an incredible performance versus Cardiff City. He won the team’s first penalty and then scored the second goal to halt their seven-game losing streak.
The 18-year-old, who has spent the majority of this season playing in midfield, has shown success in more advanced roles. Despite this, he acknowledges that he is still unsure of where he will play football in the future. In any case, the young player is really focused on goals, and his finishing in South Wales is paying dividends.
Bellingham told safc.com, “At the moment I’m just learning because I have no idea what position I am.”
“I guess it’s kind of thrilling because I’ll find out as time goes on. I don’t really care where I play as long as I’m wearing red and white; the coaches will determine where my skills best suit the team. Playing wherever for the team doesn’t bother me.
“I told Doddsy at the beginning of the season that I wanted to score ten goals. I work on my ending every day; obviously, it’s not perfect every time, which can be discouraging, but that’s the main goal—to keep getting better.”
Bellingham stated that Sunderland’s victory over Cardiff showed them to be back to their best, and he added that it is imperative that they maintain their momentum when Blackburn Rovers visit the Stadium of Light on Monday afternoon.
The 18-year-old thanked the club’s fans and expressed how much he enjoyed performing in front of them.
Bellingham stated, “I think we showed great fight and a bit of humility.”
Overall, there were some excellent performances; we just need to maintain the effort. I believe that Sunderland is a young, fierce squad that gets in your face, tries to turn the tables, and has you sprinting for your own goal—and we certainly succeeded in doing that.
We feel like a huge weight has been lifted off our shoulders since we played incredibly well and prevailed. It must have a snowball effect. It is the worst feeling in the world to lose because it makes you feel accountable to everyone who is watching. They do things that are so amazing, like the distance they traveled today. It’s a great pleasure to play in front of them, and you simply want to reward them. I’d say that’s the best support in the country, and certainly the best away from home. It involves more than just scoring; it also involves tackling and fighting.”
