Mike Dodds answers the big Jobe Bellingham question after outstanding Sunderland display

Jobe Bellingham led his Sunderland side to a 2-0 win at Cardiff City on Good Friday

According to Mike Dodds, Jobe Bellingham will probably continue to play a striking position for Sunderland—at least in the near future.

The 18-year-old’s strong presence up front was something Dodds believed his club needed, and the move paid off handsomely as Bellingham stopped the Black Cats’ seven-game losing streak at Cardiff City by winning a penalty and then scored a close-range goal.

Bellingham has spent the majority of the season playing in midfield, but he has also had some success up top and drawn attention in the capital of Wales with both his goal and his all-around performance.

“It might be hard to shift him in terms of we’ve had a positive result, he’s scored a goal and done really well,” Dodds stated.

Mike Dodds offers clear response to Jobe Bellingham Sunderland selection debate

“But, in all honesty, Jobe is the kind of guy that coaches love to have on staff because he can play anywhere you want. He’d just go in goal if I asked him to, no problem.

“I’ve done it before; in my previous term, I played him up front. We simply need a big presence at the top of the pitch, plus he has incredible footwork, which not many other number nines in this league will have. The performance should thrill us much, and hopefully it will serve as a foundation for future success. He provided us a foundation to play off of, and I’m extremely happy for him because he’s been moved around a lot this season. It’s incredible that an 18-year-old can score seven goals in the Championship.

Dodds was eager to emphasise how well he is playing in his first full season of professional football, even if he claims to have discussed his ideal position with Bellingham.

“To be honest, I believe he can be anything he wants to be,” Bellingham remarked.

“Jobe and I have had some private discussions on my assessment of his ideal position and Jobe’s, and those discussions will remain confidential. 18-year-old Jobe is sometimes unfairly forced to shoulder his brother’s burden. Putting that aside, you get an outstanding performance from an eighteen-year-old who ought to be playing football for a youth squad. He gave a really impressive performance.”
