Gary O’Neil drops encouraging update on ‘phenomenal’ Wolves star ahead of Aston Villa

This evening, Wolves takes on Aston Villa, a rival team from the Midlands, while Gary O’Neil has provided a positive report on one of his players.

After the international break, Wolves are back in action Thursday evening when they visit Aston Villa, a Premier League foe from the Midlands.

It should be an exciting match to see which club gains momentum going into the last stretch, as both teams want to finish in Europe at the end of the season.

Wolves defeated Fulham 2-1 before to the half, however the result was somewhat overshadowed by the injuries to several of their starting players.

Gary O’Neil is beginning to get some of his key players back from injury after suffering hardship in recent weeks and fielding an assault lacking in both quality and quantity. The 40-year-old provided an upbeat report on striker Matheus Cunha.

Gary O’Neil says Wolves striker Matheus Cunha is back

Cunha, Wolves’ leading scorer, left the game in February due to what was thought to be a serious hamstring injury. As a result, Wolves have been without him since.

Prior to that setback, the Brazilian was playing brilliantly, having assisted three goals and scored four in his previous six games.

O’Neil has been obliged to use Nathan Fraser as a lone striker since over the seven weeks without Cunha, Jean Ricner-Bellegarde, Pedro Neto, and Hwang Hee-Chan had all suffered injuries.

In his final game, an FA Cup quarterfinal loss to Coventry, the 19-year-old academy graduate failed to lead the line as Fraser was violently harassed.

O’Neil has been put to the test severely by a dearth of choices and an injured team, but he did disclose that Cunha is returned from his injury and might play against Aston Villa.

Matheus Cunha is scheduled to play football for the Express & Star this week, according to O’Neil.

“He’s back, doing well, and has put in a tonne of work and cut a significant amount of time off the medical diagnosis that he had.”

“He’s performed incredibly well, so I get to decide when and how long he plays. He has exhausted all possible avenues to test his hamstring, including running and training, excluding playing in a Premier League match.

“I now have to choose whether to do it starting on Tuesday, starting on the bench tomorrow, or starting tomorrow. We are making every effort to accommodate him because he is crucial to our chances not only for the game tomorrow but also for the nine that follows.

Should Matheus Cunha start v Aston Villa?

O’Neil will be tempted to start his “phenomenal” striker in the first lineup after his injury recovery.

However, in all likelihood, Fraser will continue to lead the line and the 24-year-old will start from the bench.

That may not be the preferred choice for most Wolves fans, but Cunha needs to be gradually introduced back into the game following an injury that sidelined him for seven weeks.

Of course, O’Neil is likely to get his Brazilian sharpshooter off the bench if things are not going well on the pitch and he needs some class up front.

However, the fact that his star scorer is back for a crucial run-in that will determine their destiny is a significant plus.
