Cardiff City boss Erol Bulut has delivered his verdict on the 2-0 defeat to Sunderland

Cardiff City boss criticises key decision but delivers this scathing verdict on Sunderland defeat

Cardiff City manager Erol Bulut has issued his assessment on the 2-0 defeat to Sunderland.

Cardiff City manager Erol Bulut criticized the decision to award Sunderland a penalty in the first half of Friday’s encounter, but stated he had no concerns about the outcome.

Sunderland was awarded a penalty when Jobe Bellingham drove into the box and was shoved by a Cardiff defender. Bellingham then tumbled to the ground as a second defender attempted to shut him down, and Bulut thought it was a soft call. Adil Aouchiche converted the penalty, and the Black Cats dominated the remainder of the half, adding to their lead with Bellingham’s close-range strike.

“I don’t think it was a penalty,” Bulut stated.

“I think it’s too easy to whistle. We viewed it again on the iPad, and of course the referee cannot do this because there is no VAR. The referee said there was a push, but it was only a touch, and because the other defender attempted to block him, he jumped over him. I believe the penalty was too lenient.”

Cardiff had started the game brightly, but Bulut confessed that they were far from good enough after the opening goal, even going so far as to suggest it was one of their worst performances of the season.

“Until minute 12, when we conceded a penalty, everything was fine,” he added.

“After that, we lost all of our confidence and playing shape. We were unable to generate. This is a disappointment. We were unable to wake up. We lost many duels, and there were numerous individual blunders. When you make this many mistakes, you can’t expect to win the game.

“During the international break, the guys worked extremely hard, so I expected a much better performance. It stings to watch that performance today. Today, I have to admit that this was one of the worst games we’ve played this season. I have to be clear about this. I didn’t enjoy it at all.”

Bulut will be out of contract at the end of the current season, and he believes the uncertainty is affecting his performance.
