It has been announced that Sunderland midfielder Jay Matete has had minor knee surgery after returning from his loan at Oxford United.
Due to injuries, Sunderland’s midfield player Matete missed a large portion of the first half of the season. Upon his recovery, the decision was taken to send him out on loan.
The 23-year-old signed a contract with Oxford United of League One that would last until the end of the season. Matete participated in the club’s first six games, but in the next two, he was benched, and in the last two, he was not included in the matchday squad.
The decision to bring the midfield player back has been decided now that the season is almost over.
Following discussions between Matete and sporting director Kristjaan Speakman, Sunderland made the announcement on their official club website. The former Plymouth Argyle loan player had minor knee surgery.
His season is over, but now he can devote all of his attention to getting ready for the 2024–2025 campaign. Speaking about the choice, Speakman stated:
“This news comes as a disappointing blow to Jay, who has had to navigate a really difficult season and has worked hard to return to fitness in December.”
We had an open discussion after evaluating his injury earlier this week and decided that surgery now would give him the best chance of recovering in the long run.
“We look forward to fully supporting Jay in his process, as it is a testament to his character that he is already focused on returning ahead of pre-season and making an impact.”
Considering the next season
Matete has experienced hardship this year, as Speakman himself stated. Due to injuries, he hasn’t been able to play as well as he would have liked for Oxford United or Sunderland.
It must have been difficult to decide to end the season early in preference of surgery. The gifted player from London, however, can now devote all of his attention to getting ready for preseason before starting the 2024–2025 season.
Matete has struggled to get championship playing time since the Black Cats’ ascent from League One, but this summer will see the arrival of a new boss. That might present him with an opportunity to make an impression and compete for a spot on the team after his operation and return to full health.
