Could a Dallas Cowboys reunion with franchise legend be in the cards?

Moving forward in this summer, the Dallas Cowboys will need to acquire a running back in NFL free agency.

Tony Pollard, a pro bowler, inked a contract earlier in March with the Tennessee Titans. Rico Dowdle (361 yards) and Deuce Vaughn (40 yards) are the top two returning rushers for the Cowboys from last season.

The Cowboys, who have been surprisingly quiet in free agency thus far, will need to enter the market. They’ll probably also need to select a rookie in the 2024 NFL Draft, possibly early.

The favourable tidings? Regarding veteran running backs available as free agents, there are still a few choices. It makes sense to acquire a veteran because Dallas is anticipated to use a committee strategy behind quarterback Dak Prescott in the backfield.

Ezekiel Elliott interested in returning to the Dallas Cowboys

Ezekiel Elliott, Dallas Cowboys

Elliott, who played for the New England Patriots the previous season, has expressed interest in signing with the Cowboys, according to a Tuesday report from Michael Gehlken of The Dallas Morning News. It remains to be seen if the ‘Boys are interested.

Regarding possible interest in Ezekiel Elliott, “Team owner Jerry Jones and executive vice president Stephen Jones told The Dallas Morning News this week at the NFL’s annual meeting they could neither confirm nor deny interest in the running backs.”

Dalvin Cook, a former Minnesota Vikings Pro Bowler who split time last season between the New York Jets and Baltimore Ravens, is reportedly also interested in Dallas.

Elliott, a top-four choice out of Ohio State in the 2016 NFL Draft, played his first seven seasons with the Cowboys.

In 2016, as a rookie running back for Dallas, the three-time Pro Bowler had his finest game, finishing with 1,994 total yards and 16 touchdowns. All told, over his first four seasons with Dallas, Elliott averaged 1,351 rushing yards. In his last three seasons with the ‘Boys, he struggled to the tune of less than 1,000 yards a season on average.

Zeke does appear to be a shell of the man he was before turning 28. He amassed 642 running yards at a clip of 3.5 yards per attempt during the previous season with New England.

If the Cowboys choose to rekindle their marriage after a year apart, he could at the very least serve as a short-yardage option.
