Tottenham benefit as Nottingham Forest left 'baffled' after £47.5million Brennan Johnson update

Daniel Levy pulled off a masterstroke at Tottenham by signing Brennan Johnson from Nottingham Forest last summer.

Tottenham paid Premier League strugglers Nottingham Forest £47.5 million for Johnson on deadline day last summer (Sky Sports News, September 2).

Johnson was one of the club’s most significant players, scoring 10 Premier League goals to help Forest avoid relegation last season, and some may have been startled by the Reds’ decision to trade their star player and academy graduate at the last minute.

However, recent developments suggest that they had no choice but to let go of the Welshman.

Forest has received a four-point punishment for violating the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSRs) for the 2022/23 season, according to the Official Website (18 March).

The sale of Johnson was part of a frantic attempt to balance the books at the City Ground, and Levy was on hand to help the club do so, much to the benefit of Tottenham, who signed an intriguing young prospect.

However, it appears that the sale of Johnson did nothing to assist Forest avoid penalty.

According to The Daily Mail (page 71, 22 March), Forest may appeal their four-point reduction, citing the independent commission’s denial of their evidence over the £47.5 million sale of Johnson.

Forest’s attorneys argue that the rejection means that the club would have been penalized regardless of whether Johnson was transferred to Tottenham, as the commission concluded that the sale was “insignificant.”

This has left the Reds “baffled,” with the club believing that Johnson’s sale has harmed their prospects of survival in England’s top division and indicated their willingness to comply with PSR.
