Nottingham Forest must now axe forgotten star who earns more than Murillo

Nottingham Forest may have to part ways with one of its great players this summer, prompting the club to reduce its bloated squad.

The Reds now have 28 players in the first-team squad, with many on loan away from the City Ground who are anticipated to return at the end of their current contracts.

The Reds have three loan players: Emmanuel Dennis, Remo Freuler, and Lewis O’Brien. None of them are likely to be part of Nuno Espírito Santo’s long-term ambitions.

Scott McKenna, a 27-year-old Scottish international who is out of contract at the end of the season, is presently on loan at Forest. He is unlikely to sign a new agreement and will become a free agent.

Despite the four players named above, the club should consider parting ways with another loanee, who needs a fresh start following a difficult few months at Forest and on loan.

Joe Worrall’s statistics with Nottingham Forest since promotion

Joe Worrall, a defender who came through the Nigel Doughty Academy, made it to the Forest first-team and played a key role in the team’s promotion to the Premier League in 2022.

Worrall was elected the club’s captain and made 30 appearances in England’s first division, despite the arrival of 20+ players at the City Ground in summer 2022. However, he fell down the pecking order at the start of the 2023/24 season.

Despite additions like Murillo and Andrew Omobamidele, the 27-year-old only made seven appearances until January. Off-field issues also led to the defender being advised to practice separately from the first squad.

Worrall was forced to train separately following a conflict with previous manager Steve Cooper, according to The Athletic. The specific incident is unclear.

Under new manager Nuno, the academy graduate joined Turkish Süper Lig side Besiktas till the end of the season after temporarily departing his childhood club during the January transfer window.

How much does Joe Worrall make at Nottingham Forest?

Worrall appears to have played his final game for the club, despite signing a new contract until summer 2026 only six months earlier. The team has to settle his pay.

Worrall’s stated weekly salary of £50k could save the club almost £2.6 million in salaries alone, independent of any transfer money received.

His weekly income is already more than Murillo’s, with the Brazilian presently making only £30k per week. The 21-year-old deserves much more given his recent ties with Liverpool, Arsenal, and PSG.

Worrall, regrettably, has not made the Premier League cut, with the defender displaying flashes of talent but failing to maintain performance levels.

That, along with his fallout and Forest’s FFP and PSR issues, could prompt the club to attempt to permanently sell the 6 foot 3 defender when the summer transfer market opens.
