Sunderland defender signs new deal until end of 2026-27

Sunderland AFC is delighted to announce that Aji Alese has signed a new long-term contract at the Stadium of Light.

The defender has extended his commitment to the team until the summer of 2027. His previous contract was scheduled to expire in June 2025.

Alese has made 27 appearances in red and white across all competitions since moving to Wearside from West Ham United 20 months ago.

Due to injuries, the 23-year-old has had a difficult 2023–24 season. However, he is anticipated to return on Friday when the Club’s Under-21s play Leicester City.

Aji Alese in action for Sunderland

“I’m really happy to sign a new contract at this Club,” Alese declared. I can still learn and grow from some of the wonderful experiences I’ve had thus far here. I could feel the warmth of the fans as soon as I joined, and I can’t wait to play in front of them again.

“We are really pleased to extend Aji’s contract,” Kristjaan Speakman continued. We consider him to be a valuable member of our team because he has performed well for us and has shown that he has room to grow. Although his injuries has made the past 12 months difficult for him, he will soon be able to return to action, and his positive outlook has allowed him to be involved with the team during his recuperation. We are happy to ensure Aji’s long-term future because we have big expectations for him and he shares our ambitions.
