SPFL launch investigation into Dundee vs Rangers postponement as ‘disappointment’ expressed over late call off

Ninety minutes before kickoff, referee Don Robertson declared the Dens Park pitch unusable due to “heavy rain”.

The Scottish Professional Football League, who expressed disappointment that the match could not go forward, said they will look into why Dundee’s Premiership match against Rangers was canceled.

After two pitch inspections, match official Don Robertson controversially decided to postpone the game 90 minutes before kickoff, citing “heavy rain” as the reason the Dens Park surface was unsuitable, which infuriated the Ibrox side.

When the phone came in, the Rangers team bus had just pulled up outside the stadium, and manager Philippe Clement was fuming over what he perceived to be a lack of communication from the Tayside club. This is the third occasion this season that Dundee has had to postpone games due to inclement weather; matches against Aberdeen and St Johnstone were postponed as well.

The SPFL has now spoken up and released a statement expressing their unhappiness, since Sky Sports was supposed to show the game live.

“The postponement of any match is disappointing given the impact it has on supporters,” an official for the governing body stated. This was especially frustrating because the game aired on Sky Sports live and it was right before the split. This postponement’s circumstances will be looked into by the SPFL.
