Nottingham Forest appeal plan revealed after eight-point deduction update

After being found guilty of violating the Premier League’s financial regulations, Nottingham Forest avoided a more severe eight-point deduction, sources informed Football Insider.

With nine games remaining in the 2023–24 season, the Midlands club has been dropped into the relegation zone after receiving a four-point punishment instead.

Football Insider has learned from a reliable source that the Premier League lobbied for Forest to lose eight points for breaking the Profitability and Sustainability Rule (PSR), which would have put them five points from safety.

Nottingham Forest has subsequently verified that.

However, it is said that Forest and their owner, Evangelos Marinakis, are incensed over the independent commission’s decision and intend to file an appeal in the upcoming months.

Following a violation of PSR for the 2021–22 season, Everton was first given a 10-point penalty earlier this season. However, following an appeal, their sentence was lowered to six points.

Despite escape, Nottingham Forest is “furious” and has a planning appeal.

The Toffees have not yet been told what will happen to them despite being charged with a different breach for the 2022–2023 period with Forest.

Top-tier teams are currently permitted to lose £105 million over a rolling three-year period; but, as Forest played in the Championship for two of those years, they had less wiggle room.

The Midlands club, who had been promoted in 2022, invested almost £150 million in 30 new players.

Brennan Johnson’s summer 2023 transfer to Tottenham was a major point of contention for Forest throughout their case in court, which was led by sports attorney Nick De Marco KC.

According to the independent committee, Forest turned down offers of £42 million from Atletico Madrid as well as between £30 and £35 million from Brentford.

The eventual £47.5 million sale to Spurs was completed too late to be reflected in the 2022–2023 season’s relevant financial statements.

With nine games remaining in the current term, Nuno Espirito Santo’s team is currently one point from safety and sits eighteenth in the table following the punishment.
