According to insiders who spoke with Football Insider, Liverpool and Arsenal are among the Premier League teams that are against the massive £900 million agreement for the English Football League.
The “surprising” list of elite teams that oppose a finance agreement that would see lower division English teams receive a share of around £1 billion over six years also includes West Ham United and Chelsea.
It is now thought that the Premier League teams may be forced to sign an agreement to secure EFL funding and guarantee that clubs comply by the UK government’s new football regulator.
It was disclosed during a meeting between Premier League teams on Monday, March 11, that the clubs were unable to reach a consensus and gave precedence to a new financial structure above regulations governing top-tier expenditure.
Chelsea, West Ham, Arsenal, and Liverpool are against the EFL contract.
Nearly two years ago, a basic agreement on an EFL finance structure had been established, but as of right now, the last meeting has seen his collapse.
In place of Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), clubs have “agreed to prioritise the swift development and implementation of a new League-wide financial system,” according to a Premier League statement.
Clubs are allowed to lose up to £105 million in a three-year period under the existing guidelines.
Most recently, Everton was docked ten points for breaking these rules; however, that point has subsequently been lowered to six, while Nottingham Forest was assessed a fine in advance of a possible penalty.
According to reports, Chelsea and Newcastle United are among the other teams who may be in violation of financial regulations. Should they fail to resolve their financial matters, they may be subject to fines of their own.
It’s thought that some clubs are opposed to the agreement because they don’t see why they should give prospective competitors who already have wealthy owners such a large financial advantage.
