‘We had options’: Agent admits Everton and Forest wanted to sign  ace worth £43m

Juventus won the race to sign Carlos Alcaraz in a potential £43 million deal with the Southampton loanee’s agent confirming that the Serie A giants fought off competition from Premier League duo Everton and Nottingham Forest in January.

Even though Nuno Espirito Santo’s team seized the chance to sign Gio Reyna as soon as it was clear that Borussia Dortmund was accepting offers, it now seems unlikely that the USA international was the team’s top pick.

In the last 24 hours of the transfer window, Nottingham Forest checked on Carlos “Charly” Alcaraz’s availability before bringing Reyna to the City Ground.

Everton expressed their interest as well. It appears improbable that Everton could have matched an offer that ultimately brought Alcaraz to Turin on a loan-to-buy deal for over £40 million, despite The Toffees’ widely reported financial woes.

Sebastian Lopez, the Argentine’s agent, told Diario AS, “It was the end of January.” We had previously requested from the club that Alcaraz be sold so that he could play more, and we were considering deals with Nottingham Forest, Lyon, and Marseille.

“We were conversing with Everton residents as well.

“I travelled to London to investigate all of these options on Sunday, just before the transfer window closed. And I got a call from Juventus in the midst. I therefore travelled from Southampton to Italy, where we decided on the terms of departure.

Southampton loanee could earn big-money transfer

Lopez is supporting Alcaraz to land a long-term deal at Juventus. Alcaraz joined Southampton from Racing Club in January 2023 and made an impression even though The Saints finished last in the Premier League.

But like Reyna at Forest, the persistent techie hasn’t really left his imprint at his new residence yet. Although he did pick up an assist against Napoli, the current Scudetto holders, Juventus, under by Massimiliano Allegri, have only won one of their last six Serie A games since the window closed. Juventus has now dropped to third place, 17 points behind Inter Milan, the eventual winners.

On Saturday, the relegation-threatened Nottingham Forest will visit fellow struggling team Luton Town. Everton will be keenly monitoring events at Kenilworth Road as their Merseyside derby match against Liverpool has been postponed because of the latter’s participation in the FA Cup quarterfinals.
