Cowboys Remain In Contact With Rex Ryan Over DC Position

Cowboys Remain In Contact With Rex Ryan Over DC Position.

According to a story from last week, Mike Zimmer will be the Cowboys’ next defensive coordinator.

An agreement has not yet been reached, and at least one other applicant remains in the race for the role.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Monday’s Pat McAfee Show (video link), Dallas has maintained contact with Rex Ryan.

Schefter reported during ESPN’s Super Bowl countdown broadcast on Sunday that Zimmer had been hired, although Ryan

echoed claims that a contract had not yet been signed. The latter can still be regarded a finalist for the position.

Ryan interviewed Dallas as part of the team’s search for Dan Quinn’s replacement. He had previously visited with the Broncos in 2023 regarding a DC position, so this was his second consecutive offseason meeting.

The 61-year-old most recently served as a coordinator for the Ravens’ defense from 2005 to 2008.

Following that, he was offered head coaching positions with the Jets and the Bills, but he has not coached since being fired by Buffalo in 2016.

While serving as an ESPN analyst, Ryan was not directly linked to many NFL positions (either as a head coach or a DC).

The Cowboys, who Schefter says “loved” Ryan after his interview, are still in touch, which is undoubtedly noteworthy.

Under Quinn, the team saw success in a variety of areas over the last three years, but a poor defensive performance in Dallas’ wild-card defeat to the Packers played a significant factor in another early playoff exit.

Ryan, Zimmer, or another contender will be responsible for maintaining a consistent level of performance on that side of the ball throughout the campaign.

Zimmer has been out of the NFL coaching ranks since his firing by the Vikings at the end of the 2021 season.

He spent 13 years with the Cowboys, including seven seasons as defensive coordinator, before becoming Minnesota’s head coach.

Zimmer is an experienced candidate for Mike McCarthy’s staff and a familiar face for owner Jerry Jones.

However, he faces competition to return to where his NFL coaching career began.
