Mike McCarthy says he knows how to win, and Cowboys will get over the playoff threshold.

Only hours after Jerry Jones announced he would take over as head coach for the Dallas Cowboys next season, head coach Mike McCarthy gave his fourth end-of-season press conference on Thursday.

Following the team’s loss to the Green Bay Packers in the wild card game, McCarthy’s position came under scrutiny.

With one year remaining on McCarthy’s contract, this came after three days of speculation as to whether Jones would terminate McCarthy.

On Wednesday, the coach and owner had a meeting that went over three hours.

McCarthy said he didn’t exactly have to fight for his job, but that it was a hard conversation.

Even at the podium here Thursday, you could see and hear the emotion from McCarthy, who called the end to this season “still raw.”

With this club currently having a 1-3 record in the postseason, McCarthy faced a barrage of questions at his news conference regarding why he hasn’t been able to bring this team over the finish line.

McCarthy claimed that each of the previous three years’ playoff defeats was unique.

Regarding what went wrong in that incredible defeat to Green Bay, which had Dallas trailing the team at home by 32 points in the fourth quarter at one moment

McCarthy claimed the team wasn’t flat but rather that players were playing “too fast.”

McCarthy claimed that his family’s anxiety was the only thing that truly troubled him despite the uncertainty surrounding his career this week.

Multiple times during this press conference, he reiterated his self-confidence in being able to bring a sixth Lombardi Trophy to Dallas.

McCarthy’s message to the fans echoed Jones’ statement, that this team is very close.

“We have an unbelievable fan base and they should be frustrated. We’re extremely disappointed. Disappointed for them. Disappointed

in our performance. But my message would be this, we’ve established a championship program, it’s just not a world championship yet.

We know how to win, we know how to train to win, we have the right people, but we have not crossed the threshold of winning playoff

games. It’s extremely disappointing to be sitting here talking about it, but I know how to win and we will get over that threshold,” McCarthy said.

Similar to McCarthy, Dak Prescott is about to enter his last year on a contract.

McCarthy stated that he thinks Prescott is the team’s solution and that he can advance.

Dan Quinn, the defensive coordinator, is interviewing for head coaching positions as part of the coaching team.

Speaking on Quinn’s possible comeback, McCarthy referred to him as “a highly valued member of the staff.”

Before the next season, the Cowboys owner will undoubtedly face further inquiries over his coaching staff and squad.
