Liverpool maintain interest in Levi Colwill despite signing six-year Chelsea contract

Liverpool and Brighton expressed interest in a permanent transfer after.

Levi Colwill signed a six-year contract with Chelsea last summer.

Reds continue to follow the status of the England defender.

Even though Levi Colwill, a defender for Chelsea, inked a new deal last summer that would keep him at

Stamford Bridge until 2029, 90min understands that Liverpool is still keeping an eye on him.

After a successful loan stint with Brighton & Hove Albion during the 2022–2023 season, where he

helped the Seagulls to a club record–tying sixth-place Premier League finish, Colwill was courted by

Liverpool upon his return to Chelsea.

Despite interest from Liverpool and Brighton over a permanent deal, Colwill put pen to paper on a new

six-year contract with the option for a further year at Chelsea in August.

Sources have told 90min that the Reds remain huge admirers of Colwill and will continue to watch him

closely in case a potential exit route from Chelsea materializes.

Liverpool have long been keen on Colwill since his days on loan at Huddersfield Town, but Chelsea are

absolutely not interested in selling the 20-year-old, seeing him as a potential future captain – he

skippered the team in their 2-1 loss at Manchester United last month.

Whether or not outgoings are judged financially required in 2024, Chelsea will not even value Colwill if a

suitor approaches and the player is not one the club considers for sale.

However, a sticking point this season for many Chelsea fans has been Colwill’s role in the backline,

making 16 appearances in an unfavoured left-back position.

If Colwill continues in this spot in the long-term, there could be a push from the player’s side for a return

to his natural position and perhaps even to leave the club in search of that opportunity. Colwill is

expecting to be considered as a centre-back for England for Euro 2024 after impressing for the Young

Lions in their triumphant Under-21 European Championship last summer.

Nevertheless, Chelsea’s current stance is to automatically reject any offers they receive for Colwill.

According to 90min, Liverpool may bring in two new center backs this summer: a guy for the future and

a more well-known player. Despite the Bundesliga leaders’ lack of desire to sell, they have been paying

careful attention to Jonathan Tah of Bayer Leverkusen and have shown a tangible interest in the

Germany international in recent months.

Liverpool is interested in Telleres’ Kevin Mantilla, a younger option. The club president

recently disclosed that the Reds have been monitoring the 20-year-old for a number of months.

Liverpool may try to sign Facundo Gonzalez in 2025, but he is currently on loan at Sampdoria from

Juventus. He is also  being watched.
