Unai Emery explains what really matters to him after second Manager of the Month trophy

After winning his second Manager of the Month award, Unai Emery discusses what matters most to him.

According to Unai Emery, he cares more about points than accolades.

Following Aston Villa’s incredible December performance, the Spaniard accepted the Manager of the Month trophy for the second time. He was then questioned about trying to rebuild his reputation in English football.

He was only Arsene Wenger’s replacement at Arsenal for eighteen months, but he was thrust back into the spotlight when he won the Europa League with Villareal and signed a high-profile contract with Paris St. Germain.

He has an excellent track record at Villa Park. When he took charge, Villa was three points above the relegation zone; nonetheless, they finished in seventh place and made it into the Europa Conference League.

The highlight of Villa’s eight-game winning streak last month was their back-to-back home victory over Manchester City and Arsenal. However, they also surrendered a two-goal lead at halftime against Manchester United.

When asked if he felt vindicated, Emery said, “It’s football; winning is always the only answer I have.” This kind of work is what I love to do. I have high standards for myself. However, I knew—and still know—that you have to prevail. You have to improve every day.

I don’t give my reputation any thought. I’m not holding out to read about myself. I’m not watching or listening to those who talk negatively about us. or myself. I realize that we are winning, and they will speak clearly. They’re going to say something if we lose.
