In the FA Cup’s third round on Sunday night, Liverpool faced up against Premier League rivals Arsenal away from home at the Emirates Stadium in North London.

Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez got the game underway. Manager Jurgen Klopp deployed the 24-year-old as the primary striker in a three-man assault. The legendary Alan Shearer of Newcastle United was questioned about Nunez in the lead-up to the match.

The all-time great acknowledged that Nunez’s quickness is a challenge for opposing defenses, but he also stated that the Uruguayan international needs to improve his finishing.

Shearer said about Nunez on BBC One (4:15 pm, January 7, 2024): “The one thing I do like about him if he never ever shies away, that doesn’t stop him getting in there, that has got to continue, but what also has to continue is he has to work on his finishing and his numbers have to be better because the chances that he gets he missed far too many.

“He has also got that thing that defenders hate playing against, which is great pace. He is quick. He gets himself in so many great positions, he doesn’t have to be offside as many times as he is because of his electric pace.

“If he just waited, just be a little bit more patient for a second or so, then he would get in so many other times as well. I think there is definitely goals in there, but he has to work on that.”

My View: Darwin Nunez will get better

In my opinion, Liverpool and Uruguay international striker Darwin Nunez will get better. Nunez is not at his best yet, but he is only 24 and will improve.

Nunez is a striker who consistently presents a challenge to opponents despite missing opportunities. In addition, he is extremely swift and poses a threat to the opposing team’s defense whenever he is on the field, as Alan Shearer has observed.

The striker needs to improve his finishing in training, in my opinion. He has to learn a few things from the Liverpool coaching staff, such how to smash the ball cleanly.

Nunez’s career total in the Premier League is 48 appearances. In those contests, the striker has tallied 14 goals and provided nine assists.
