Yankees Take A Chance On Former Top Prospect

This offseason, the New York Yankees have already made one noteworthy acquisition.

That was the San Diego Padres trading for All-Star outfielder Juan Soto.

However, considering how much the Yankees typically spend in free agency, you may assume that the Soto trade was just the beginning.

The Yankees haven’t signed any notable free agents as of yet.

In the minor league free-agent market, they did, however, make a noteworthy move.

According to the Yankees, they have claimed former top prospect Jeter Downs off waivers from the Washington Nationals.

Downs was most famously a part of the package sent back to the Boston Red Sox in the Mookie Betts trade.

But, he has yet to pan out in his MLB career.

Downs has played in 20 major league games in his career.

In those games, he has batted .182 with 22 strikeouts and five walks.

On the positive side, Downs is only 25 years old.

There is still plenty of time for him to turn his career around.

The Yankees merely hope that they will be the ones to enable him to realize his greatest potential.

Downs is probably going to begin the 2024 season in the minor leagues.

In the past, the Yankees have done a fantastic job of developing their players.

Whether Downs can become the next Yankee success story will be exciting to watch.

Not many Yankees fans may find this to be an exciting move.

However, this is just the first of hopefully many to come.
