Dean Jones shares Everton transfer update on Tottenham interest in Ben Godfrey
An update on Tottenham’s interest in Ben Godfrey was provided by Dean Jones, who said that while the club is still in talks with Everton, the interest is real.
The 25-year-old is anticipated to leave Goodison Park when the January transfer window opens.
This season, he has made only one appearance for Sean Dyche’s team, coming off the bench for one minute of Premier League play in September.
The Toffees defender is being pursued by Ange Postecoglou’s team, and although Godfrey is keen to leave Merseyside, the transfer hasn’t gone any further than this initial inquiry.
He stated, as reported by Give Me Sport on December 14, “Yes, there is unquestionably truth to that.
As Ben Godfrey searches for opportunities to go, Tottenham is undoubtedly one of the teams considering that offer.
I had heard a while back that Lloyd Kelly was being considered, but it’s really tough to close that transaction right now.
“I simply don’t think that Kelly one will take place. In light of this, I believe Godfrey does become a more viable choice.
Other options exist as well, and we must take into account the fact that Tottenham is altering their methodology and perspective when it comes to acquisitions.
“So I don’t think this is done or anything. But in terms of whether those rumours are true, I do believe them to be.”
Nothing but interest
It seems as though Tottenham do have a genuine interest in signing Godfrey this summer, but it remains to be seen whether or not Spurs turn that interest into a genuine bid to give Everton a decision to make.
The 25-year-old may have barely played in the Premier League so far this season, but he looks set to be called upon when the Toffees face Burnley on Saturday 16 December. Suspension has revealed the lack of defensive depth in Dyche’s side and he is arguably Everton’s third-best centre-back.
When appropriate and accessible For the Toffees, Jarrad Branthwaite and James Tarkwoski will always start, but if one of them is sidelined due to injury, it’s up to Michael Keane and Godfrey to step up.
Everton will have to let Godfrey leave Goodison in January if Tottenham pays a fair price, but Dyche might need to find a new backup for the balance of the campaign if the Toffees manager doesn’t have enough options.
