Scales, who has played in 50 games this season and has occasionally donned the captain’s armband in Callum McGregor’s absence, has been a crucial player for Celtic at center back.

Scales’ contract extension was announced just one day after James Forrest’s new one-year contract with the team was finalized.

Speaking after signing his new deal, Scales said: “I’m delighted to commit for another few years here.

“It’s an amazing club and I’ve grown to love it. I feel a real part of it now.

“I really enjoy myself here, I love my life here in Scotland and it was good for all parties to get this done.

“I’m hopeful that the upcoming years will be my best.

“I’ve played for Ireland and the club in almost 150 games, so I feel like I have the game experience now.”

“Everything is coming together nicely, and I just want to keep going in the right direction for the next few years.”

Martin O’Neill added: “I’m delighted for him and delighted for the club because I think Liam’s been outstanding, and since I’ve been here, he’s been absolutely terrific.

“We are a better team when he’s in and he’s also got the ability to play left-back, and I think it’s good news for the club because he’s always there.

“I like him a lot and I think he’s been a major player for us this season.”
