Astros’ In-State Rival Rangers Might Have Handed Out Nightmare Contract

Although the Houston Astros may not sign any players this offseason, their competitors may soon find themselves stuck with a poor contract.

The Houston Astros’ lack of action in the offseason following their elimination before competing in the World Series to defend their title has garnered a lot of attention. When their rival Texas Rangers defeated them and won the championship, it got much worse.

The Rangers spent a ton of money overhauling their roster in an attempt to compete with the Astros. While many of those moves have paid off, one of the most prominent contracts given to star pitcher Jacob deGrom could end up being disastrous.

“He was already 34 years old when the Rangers unexpectedly signed him to a five-year, $185 million contract last winter because he was unable to maintain his health in 2021 or 2022. Unexpectedly, he only made six starts with Texas before having Tommy John surgery, which could potentially sideline him for the entirety of 2024, according to Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report.Whoa.

That is a lot of money for only six starts over a two year span. They’re on the hook for multiple large contracts during this championship window they’ve spent to be in, and not having one of the premier pitchers in the game hurts their chances of winning multiple.

They were able to become World Series winners without deGrom last season, but Texas was forced to move multiple future pieces at the deadline to ensure their roster was still strong down the stretch.

Houston, of course, is quite fine with this. The Astros have a much better chance of dominating this division for years to come since their opponents have nightmare contracts on the books and are dealing away future prospects. As he works to restore their own worn-out farm system, Dana Brown was brought in to make sure this won’t happen to their team.

Though many are disappointed by what Houston hasn’t accomplished in free agency this summer, at least they haven’t signed a deal that will probably be remembered as a disaster.
