While captain Sam Morsy, Omari Hutchinson, Ben Johnson, and Massimo Luongo are all back in training, town
manager Kieran McKenna has stated that winger Chiedozie Ogbene is most likely lost for the season after
undergoing surgery after tearing his achilles at Brentford last week.
Ogbene sustained the injury during the build-up to the Blues’ second goal and was carried out on a stretcher during
the first half at the Gtech Community Stadium.
McKenna stated, “Chieo had surgery yesterday; it was an achilles tear.” It’s likely that he won’t play much or any
football this season due to that kind of damage, but the surgery went well and he’s a genuinely cheerful man in high
spirits.
“Now, a lot of it will be focused on getting ready for the upcoming season; anything else would be a bonus.”
The Egyptian international was on the turf this morning, but he missed last week’s game due to a hamstring injury
sustained during the Everton game.
McKenna went on, “We have to make a decision because he trained today.” Since the Everton game, he has truly
been missed. He should be available for the squad because he has completed one session, but we will need to decide
with him on the number of minutes, and that discussion will take place later today.
The Blues manager praised Jens Cajuste, who took Morsy’s place against the Bees after he had just resumed training
after suffering a knee injury.
He stated, “Jens has come through OK.” He made a great effort, I must say. I’m proud of how he performed, but even
more so of how he pushed his body beyond what would have been optimum under the circumstances.
“He deserves a lot of praise because it demonstrates his dedication to the cause and his character. Hopefully, he can
maintain his fitness now, and if he can, we believe he’ll be
With Axel Tuanzebe (hand) and Harry Clarke (one-match ban) out this weekend, it’s good to hear that right-back
Johnson has also resumed training following a thigh issue.
McKenna stated, “We have to make a decision on that one again because Ben trained a little bit today and performed
some set plays yesterday.”
He hasn’t trained much and has been absent for a long time. Although it will be a tough game, he is currently in a
situation where we require assistance.
“So, after the session, we’re going to make that call and talk to those players.”
McKenna affirmed that Luongo is training following his ankle problem and that Hutchinson, who was sick last week,
is “OK.”
He stated that Massimo could be involved prior to the international break because he trained today.
Following the international break, Tuanzebe, Jack Taylor, and Jacob Greaves (both hamstring) are anticipated to
return: “Very likely so.”
