The full-back captained the side at the weekend and set them on their road to victory last night.
Celtic full back Alistair Johnston has been one of the team’s greatest players this season, and he received acclaim after scoring another goal in their win over Dundee last night.
Despite dominating proceedings, the Hoops were to make a breakthrough against Tony Docherty’s side, with the Canadian right back opening the scoring on the hour mark with a close-range strike. Following Aberdeen’s triumph over Rangers on last night’s Sportscene, in which full-back Nicky Devlin played an important role, attention shifted to happenings at Celtic Park, where Johnston was also singled out for praise by Michael Stewart.
The 26-year-old now has four goals this season, his first at home for Brendan Rodgers’ side, which he scored only minutes after coming off the bench. He was also the team’s captain against Motherwell on Sunday, with Callum McGregor out due to injury.
“He’s a fantastic player, and everything that we’ve just been talking about in terms of desire and hunger, a genuine winner; Alistair Johnston’s got that in bucketloads,” Stewart remarked.
“He’s very much in the same style as Devlin, attacking full-backs; he’s always looking to get into those dangerous places. This is an incredible finish; driving in there at the near post and hitting the target was no easy feat.
“It’s a huge honour for Alistair Johnston to step up and take the captain’s armband when Callum McGregor was out of the team over the weekend. I believe that when you look at Juranovic and the impact he had at Celtic, he simply left and was entirely forgotten.
“Alistair Johnston came in, and straight away, you could see this guy was a winner, and he continues to improve as well.”
