Southampton could be without seven players for Everton clash as fitness issues worsen

Russell Martin, the manager of Southampton, may be missing several players for Saturday’s match against Everton. On Tuesday evening, he announced that some members of his first team have contracted an illness virus.

Saints are at the bottom of the Premier League standings after only gaining one point from their nine games this season. They required a goal in the 88th minute to defeat Stoke City 3-2 on Tuesday, but they advanced to the Carabao Cup quarterfinals.

Following the game, Martin disclosed that he has had some availability concerns, but he also hinted that other players would be unable to participate in training later this week due to illness.

“We had a few guys that were going to play tonight that can’t because they’re not very well,” he said. “There was some infection and other issues in the camp. Over the past few weeks, I believe everyone has experienced it at different times. Although he wasn’t feeling well, Flynn [Downes] could have played.

Before the game, Wee Man [Ryan Fraser] wasn’t feeling well, but he wanted to try, and after that, he felt a little tight and exhausted. He came off because he didn’t have the spark he usually does, but he wanted to try it and I believe that will be crucial for him.

“Hopefully, even a half-hour will help him feel better immediately. I do anticipate that everyone will be back to training and feeling OK by Friday, or maybe Thursday. Although he was on the bench, Jack Stephens might have played if he had recovered from Saturday. We’re simply handling Adam Armstrong’s minutes, but he’s fine.

“Like the other men who aren’t involved, Ryan Manning and a few other people merely ticked over at the training field. Since the weekend, he has not been feeling well. I anticipate that most of them, if not all of them, will be prepared by Thursday or Friday, and that some of them will train tomorrow.”

Midfielder Will Smallbone has missed the last six games with a knee injury, while Southampton will also be without goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu owing to a chronic achilles problem.

Despite putting up a lackluster showing in Saturday’s 1-1 tie with Fulham, Everton is coming to the south coast undefeated in their past five Premier League games.
