Toto Wolff called F1 rival ‘idiotic’ as WhatsApp chat from team principal group emerges

Toto Wolff, the Ferrari CEO, stated that Fred Vasseur ‘looked dumb’ in a WhatsApp group chat with the team leaders. The two are really good friends, and the Mercedes boss’ words were intended as a lighthearted joke.

Ferrari had their best weekend of the season so far in Austin. All of the excitement leading into the race was about the new upgrades for Red Bull and McLaren, but the Scuderia took a step ahead at the Circuit of the Americas.
After pursuing Max Verstappen and Lando Norris in the sprint race, Ferrari immediately gained command of the Grand Prix. Charles Leclerc moved from fourth to first in the first two corners, while Carlos Sainz took second place after a good undercut on Red Bull’s top driver.
Leclerc and Sainz eventually crossed the finish line to give Ferrari its first one-two of the season, and with only 48 points separating them from Constructors’ Championship leaders McLaren, a first title since 2008 is not out of the question for F1’s oldest team.

Following the United States Grand Prix, Vasseur and Wolff revealed an amusing interaction they had in the team principal’s WhatsApp communication. “He’s so good,” the Mercedes head said during the press conference. “I stated that I am inspired by Fred, the Ferrari crew, and his performances. “I really am.”

Vasseur then revealed his pal and rival’s cheeky WhatsApp message to followers, saying: “He told me for once you don’t look like an idiot or something like this in the WhatsApp [group chat], no?”

Wolff added, “I said you still seem foolish, but you’re not idiotic! It’s fantastic how you’ve recovered from before the summer to being so dominant now. We look at it with admiration. I don’t want to kiss you because people would know!”
Vasseur has undoubtedly energized his drivers; Leclerc and Sainz left Austin confident that the Scuderia might jump two places and win the championship this season. “That’s the target,” remarked the most recent race winner.
“I just hope we can keep doing it for the rest of the season and eventually win the Constructors’ Championship. It is an optimistic objective, but I would rather have it that way than anything else. We’ll go for it and see where we are at the end of the season.”

Sainz went further: “I think McLaren definitely have the upper hand with the points advantage, but, at the same time, we are not far enough from them for them to get comfortable, especially if we keep doing races like this.”
