Frustration for Graham Alexander as Bradford City squander lead at Cheltenham

A 1-1 tie against Cheltenham stopped Bradford’s three-match winning streak, leaving Graham Alexander disappointed.

Bradford did not retake control until after halftime after Luke Young scored a long-range equaliser ten minutes after Neill Byrne gave the Bantams the lead in the first five minutes.

They had a lot of control over the second period, but they were unable to come up with a winner and lost the opportunity to move up into the top three in League Two.

“After taking the lead, we are really frustrated,” Alexander remarked.

“To be honest, we were second best on many duels at the front and back, and we let Cheltenham get back into the game by not doing the fundamentals correctly.

They will believe they earned their equaliser because they had fantastic chances, but their competitiveness overcame us in the first half.

“We should have won the game because the second half was so dominant, but we were unable to find that elusive second goal. That was exactly what we wanted.”

“We were able to demonstrate our quality because we had good opportunities, hit the bar, and it was much better on a competitive level.”

Byrne scored his second goal in two games by nodding in Richie Smallwood’s free kick.

However, the Robins retaliated when Harrison Sohna rolled a corner to Young, who attempted a 30-yard shot and, despite Sam Walker’s best efforts, was unable to keep it out.

Joel Colwill forced a reaction save from Walker, and the Bradford number one also denied Jordan Thomas, giving Cheltenham the advantage until halftime.

After the interval, Bradford got better, and in the 50th minute, Joe Day stopped Andy Cook’s header.

In the 55th minute, Bobby Pointon saw a shot strike the bar, and seconds later, the same man earned another stop from Day.

In the 79th minute, with the score tied, Walker turned a low shot from Ethon Archer, Cheltenham’s best effort of the second half, around the post.
