Swansea City’s seven-hour wait goes on, departure confirmed and a damning verdict

Seven hours have passed, Swansea City’s exit has been confirmed, and the verdict is scathing.

The goalless draw between Swansea City and Sheffield Wednesday was about as forgettable a Championship match as you’re likely to see.

Ronald’s effort in the second half was the only time either goalie had to make a save that evening, despite the fact that both teams struck the post.

The goalless draw between Swansea City and Sheffield Wednesday was about as forgettable a Championship match as you’re likely to see.

The only time either goalie had to make a save that evening was Ronald’s effort in the second half, despite the fact that both teams struck the post.

Many Swans supporters will question how much the team has genuinely improved in the last 12 months or so after seeing that the Northern Irishman actually had two more points at this time in his reign last season.

On the heels of a match that might have been forgotten as soon as the coaches arrived at the Severn bridge, there were also a number of additional talking points for fans to consider as they headed home from South Yorkshire.

Seven-hour wait goes on

Swansea’s last goal, which came in the 1-1 draw with Bristol City about a month ago, was scored by Ben Cabango more than 435 minutes, or just over seven hours, ago.

Since going 492 minutes without scoring under Steve Cooper in 2021, this is the biggest goal drought Swansea has had.

Ironically, the Swans finished that run with a 3-0 victory over Millwall, the visitors to Swansea.com Stadium, on Saturday.

Few would be overly optimistic that it will happen again, but if October’s Goal of the Month competition is to go, Williams needs to come up with a solution quickly.

Following the most recent stalemate at Hillsborough, Williams stated, “Of course there’s frustration [over not scoring] because you cannot win without scoring a goal,” However, I believe that the guys in our group will begin to score goals.

Although there are many good things about our performances, we must obviously start scoring more goals.

“The issue would have been resolved long ago if I had known the precise solution. We struck the woodwork today, and occasionally that’s the closest you can get.”

A departure

According to Williams, winger Adam Reach is no longer training with the Swans, which seems to have dealt a blow to any ambitions of the team expanding its offensive options by entering the free agent market.

Despite training with former Swan Cyrus Christie during the international break, the seasoned forward doesn’t seem to be planning to sign a long-term contract with the team.

Christie, though, is still being evaluated and seems to be in the running for a second stint with the team.

Williams informed the BBC following Tuesday’s goalless game that Adam Reach was no longer training with them. Although having him here was wonderful, we have now moved on.

“Cyrus Christie is still training with us so as soon as I can give you a further update, I will do.”

Robbo’s damning verdict

Andy Robinson has never been afraid to voice his thoughts.

The former 2006 Football League Trophy winner didn’t think much of subtlety or in-depth analysis this time. Maybe he thought it wasn’t necessary.

Or maybe he just didn’t have the energy to analyse it all because he was so bored by what was a contest soaked in so much objective tedium.

In any case, many Jack Army members likely felt that his perspective captured the essence of the evening.

He posted a simple message on social media: “Awful game of football good night.”

Alright, listen to me now. However, things aren’t entirely horrible right now. Despite this lacklustre run, there have been some encouraging developments.

For instance, the performance against Stoke City in the first half was full of sincere offensive intent and most likely merited more.

Swansea’s defending, however, has been their strongest point this season and was once again remarkably strong on Tuesday.

The Swans have only given up less goals this season than Burnley and Sheffield United, and the match at Hillsborough marked Swansea’s fourth clean sheet of the year.

It’s a really good starting point for Williams and his group. But during the next few weeks, building on it will undoubtedly be the most difficult task.
