East West Rail: A New Chapter in Regional Connectivity

A significant milestone has been reached in the East West Rail project as a test train successfully completed its inaugural journey between Oxford and Milton Keynes. This marks a crucial step towards the reopening of the rail route, which has been closed for nearly six decades.

On Monday morning, a Chiltern Class 168 train left Oxford station and began a historic voyage along the newly repaired East West Rail line. The train traveled through Bicester, Winslow, and Bletchley before arriving at Milton Keynes Central. The entire voyage took 42 minutes, and the train reached a top speed of 100 mph on numerous sections of the line.

This successful test run was made possible by a partnership between Network Rail and Chiltern Railways. The accomplishment highlights the significant progress made on the project and puts the reopening of the rail line closer to reality.

The completion of this test train is a significant milestone in the East West Rail project. As testing progresses, the line is expected to provide improved connection between Oxford and Milton Keynes, helping commuters, businesses, and the wider region. The restoration of this train link will not only improve travel times, but will also help to promote sustainable economic development and cut carbon emissions.

Chiltern Railways’ Programme Director, Rianna Stanwell, said, “I am delighted that Chiltern will be running the first series of test trains between Oxford and Milton Keynes.”

“Working with colleagues at Network Rail and the EWR Alliance this important step in the programme will ensure the infrastructure is ready for passenger service in the future.”

David Hughes, CEO of East West Railway Company, stated, “This is a fantastic achievement and a very proud moment for everyone at East West Rail.”

“I’d want to thank all of our East West Rail Alliance colleagues who have worked so hard to reconstruct this railway, as well as our local communities, for their patience and understanding throughout the building process.
