Southampton should replace Martin with David Moyes

Russell Martin is in a precarious position following Southampton’s most recent surrender to Leicester City.

On Saturday afternoon, Southampton played Leicester in a six-point early relegation match.

Joe Aribo and Cameron Archer both scored goals as the Saints jumped out to a two-goal lead.

It’s possible that supporters were duped into believing that this would be their first three points of the season.

Although Facundo Buonanotte managed to cut the deficit in half, Ryan Fraser’s dismissal for yanking Jamie Vardy’s shirt in the box ended any chance of victory.

Before Jordan Ayew crushed the Saints with a thrilling victory in the 98th minute, Vardy converted from 12 yards out and slammed the ball past Aaron Ramsdale.

When Ayew pulled Paul Onuachu’s shirt, Southampton should have got a penalty with the score at 2-2, but the referee would not allow it, and Martin lost for the seventh time in eight games.

Russell Martin retains backing from the Southampton board

Martin still has the support of Southampton’s board, who are unwilling to abandon the player who got them promoted nine games ago, despite their terrible Premier League start.

According to Sky Sports, the team is determined to avoid making rash decisions based on feelings and instead wants to focus on the long-term strategy of the team and how Martin fits into it.

Their trust in the 38-year-old is admirable, but it might have long-term consequences for the Saints’ chances of winning the Premier League as Martin hasn’t shown that he is the man to save them.

Southampton has two options: appoint someone who is skilled at keeping clubs in the Premier League, or continue with sentimental value and believe in a project that might not let them survive in the second division.

There is now one manager who meets the second need, and some others, in case they decide to fire the Englishman.

David Moyes should be Southampton’s replacement for Martin.

Nobody is certain that maintaining Martin will help Southampton, who are now in a vulnerable position at the bottom of the table.

Position Team Played Won Drawn Lost For Against Diff Points
17 Ipswich 8 0 4 4 6 16 -10 4
18 Crystal Palace 8 0 3 5 5 11 -6 3
19 Southampton 8 0 1 7 6 18 -12 1
20 Wolves 8 0 1 7 10 23 -13 1

If the Saints don’t appoint a manager with Premier League experience like David Moyes, they might end themselves at the bottom of the standings and facing relegation by Christmastime.

Moyes is now without a club having being let go by West Ham in the summer, possibly regrettably after seeing how Julen Lopetegui has performed in East London.

With 697 games played and 269 victories, the Scotsman has a wealth of experience in the top division.

But more significantly, he has a record that some managers can only hope for, having led West Ham from relegation contenders to Europa Conference League champions in his six years there.

His ability to build a solid defence, squeeze every ounce of skill out of his players, and be tactically attentive are all things the present manager lacks.

After finishing third in Premier League history, behind Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger, Moyes was once called “incredible” by manager Jurgen Klopp.
Employing someone like Moyes could be the Saints’ only chance to turn a disastrous scenario into a positive one in their fight for survival, yet it is unknown if the difficult conditions they are currently facing would convince the former Everton manager.
